Quick Start UP in XP

Follow these Simple Steps



* Step 1 – Open the Registry Editor.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Select WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the value to 1000.

* Step 3 – Select the HungAppTimeout value and set it to 1000 as well.



* Step 4 – Navigate to


HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop



Set the WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the value to 1000. Select the HungAppTimeout\newline value and set it to 1000 as well.

* Step 5 – Navigate to


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control


Select the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value and set it to 1000.

* Step 6 – Close the Registry Editor.

Go to Start Menu and Click Run
Type in regedit then click ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to Y .
Reboot your Pc and see the change yourself.

Make Undeletable Or Unreadable Folders

By holding down alt, then typing numbers on the number pad (right of the keyboard) you can create special characters. If you hold down alt, then press 1, then let go, you got the ascii character 1. You try some randomn numbers. This goes all the way up to 255. Open a dos prompt, and type md (alt+1+9+4)someword. md is the dos command to make a directoy, now try and open the directory in Windows, you can't. To open it, type ren (alt+1+9+4)someword someword (ren is the dos command to rename).

Boot your Computer Faster



Many computers take a lot of time to boot (or start ).This is due to many reasons.

Some slight changes can do wonders for your system:

1.Press start->run then type msconfig and press enter.

Go to the startup tab. Here you will see a list of startup items. These are all the programs that automatically start when you boot your PC. It is these that slow down the boot up process.

So uncheck all the unwanted items like ms-office, messengers other utilities that u may not need at startup). Don't uncheck your antivirus software.

Changing ANY user password without having to know the existing password

This tweak gives a user the opportunity to use it for good or bad. It enables the user to re-password any account without having to know the existing password and also shows you every account that exists on the machine (even the ones that are hidden). This is a good tool to use if you forgot a password to say your administrator account and you needed to be logged into the admin account for any reason.

To view all of the user accounts:

1) While logged onto the computer, click on Start>Run>and type in CMD.

2) From the command prompt window, type in net users. This will show you every account that is made onto the computer whether it is hidden or not.

To change an account password:

1) While logged onto the computer to an account that has administrative rights, click on Start>Run>and type in CMD.

2) Type in net user then the name of the account then * and press enter. heres an example: net user administrator * or net user "Joe Smith" * . Put the name in quotes if it contains spaces.

3) From there it should ask for a new password. Type in your new password (type very carefully - the command window won't display what you type) and once more to confirm it. If you get the message that the command succeeded successfully you're all set!!

Step 2. Next, upload (save) this music file to some web space server either using your FTP program or your web host's file management control panel.

INCREASING BAND WIDTH

Increasing Band-Width By 20%:Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc
To get it back:Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth.Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Creating Shutdown Icon or One Click Shutdown:
Navigate to your desktop. On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut).
You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.

Brighten up your My Computer panel
All the Xp users would have been bored by the boring icons in their My Computer panel which are adjacent to the Hard disk drives(C:,D: or whatever drive letter you have).By default it is something like this:

Here is a simple tweak by which you will be able to change this monotonous icon to anything you like,even your own Picture if you wish.Here is an example of what kind of output you can get:

You can put any image in place of one which I have shown,even the picture of your favourite celebrity or your dream caror your own Picture.Here are the steps you need to follow:
1.First of all the picture you want to use should have .ico extension(if you already have a pic with .ico extension proceed to step
2).Most of the pictures we normally use have extensions like .jpg,.bmp,.png..gif etc, so you first need to convert them to one with .ico extension.This is simple.Just go here and put your original image in the 'Source Image 'section,then click on 'Generate Favicon.ico ' button to get your image with .ico extension.

2.Now go to My Computer.Suppose you want to put this icon in place of your original C: image.Double click and enter C: .Paste your .ico image file in it.Also create a new text file and in it type the following lines:
[autorun]ICON=favicon.ico
Remember that 'favicon.ico' in the second line is the name of your image file.If you have an image file with .ico extension by the name of 'abc.ico',then use that in the second line in place of 'favicon.ico'.

3.Now rename this text file as ' autorun.inf ' (without the quotes).
Important Note:How do I rename my text file as autorun.inf ?
Ans.Go to Tools->Folder options.Under the View tab uncheck the 'Hide extensions for known file types'.Press apply.Now rename your text file as 'autorun.inf'.
You should get something like this in your C: now:

4.Now restart your Pc.You are done.Check out the cool new picture you have just added in your My computer panel.

NOTEPAD AS PERSONAL DAIRY....

Use the Notepad as your personal diary
There is a simple feature in Notepad that can make it work like a personal diary for you.Here is how to go about it:
1.Firstly open a blank Notepad file.
2. Now write .LOG as the first line in the file, then press enter. Now save the file and close it.
3.Open the notepad file now and you will find that the current date and time has been appended(put) at the end and the cursor is in the next line.
4. Type your notes and then save and close the file.
5. Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process,that is it appends the date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor below it.This way you can keep track of all your entries,you can easily monitor which article you wrote when.This can work very much like a personal diary.

BACKGROUND SOUND FOR A GIF IMAGE....

How cool is that? It's really cool!
You can send special messages in recorded audio that no one would even guess to your friend in picture format.It's like combining 2 files to become 1 and when you run the combined file, it will by default display the picture. To listen to the audio that is embedded into the picture file, you'll need to manually load the combined file into Winamp.Here's the test I did.

1. Combine audio (.mp3) with picture (.gif)I use the command "copy picture.gif /b +

audio.mp3 /b combined.gif" in DOS prompt.

look in my C: drive and now I have a new file "combined.gif"I run the combined.gif file and it display the same picture as picture.gif.I run Winamp and manually load the combined.gif, I am able to play the audio.mp3 sound. I tried to load combined.gif file into Windows Media Player and I can only see the picture.gif. No sound at all. Looks like Winamp can support this feature but not Windows Media Player.

2. Combine audio (.wav) with picture (.gif)I use the same picture.gif but now I am combining the picture file with a .wav sound file. Wav is another type of sound format.Used the same command "copy picture.gif /b + audio.wav /b combined.gif" in DOS prompt.

I ran combined.gif and it is able to display the picture.gif picture file. Tried to load it into Winamp, doesn't play this time. Loaded the combined.gif into Windows Media Player, it also only display the picture but no sound.Looks like only .mp3 sound format is supported.

3. Combine audio (.mp3) with picture (.jpg)Since only mp3 works, we'll try combining mp3 with another type of picture format with is JPG.Used the same command "copy picture.jpg /b + audio.mp3 /b combined.jpg" in DOS prompt.

Ran the combined.jpg and it displayed the picture.jpg. Then I tried loading the combined.jpg into Winamp, and it played the music. Again, loaded combined.jpg into Windows Media Player, I can only see the picture but no music.

From the test above, I believe that hiding audio inside picture can only work when you embed MP3 audio into picture file. I also believe that other picture format such as TIFF, PNG or Bitmap will work.Tom Scott explains that the GIF format allows for an "application extension block" - an arbitrary section for applications that isn't checked by the GIF parser. Meanwhile, Winamp and other MP3 players ignore all data in the file that isn't marked as an MP3 block. The result: the picture viewer ignores the music, and the MP3 player ignores the picture.
Eventhough he only mentioned GIF, but I tested on JPG and it works as well.
If you're on a Linux box, you can do it by using the command "cat picture.gif sound.mp3 > combined.gif"

Save the file on ur desktop close notepad.
Then re-open the file from ur desktop ..

SPEED UP U'R HARD DISK

To speed up your hard disk speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the disk.
This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.Follow these steps:
Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.
Expand the system.ini file window.
Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].
Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type
Irq14=4096
Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!
Click on the File menu, then choose Save.
Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.
Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

LOCKING THE DESKTOP

You may need to protect your desktop to protect it from being changed.
To do this follow these steps:
1-From Start menu choose Run
2-Type "regedit" and then press OK.
3-Then select the followingHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
4-If you see the value "No Save Settings" in the right side, double click it and change its value to "1"
5-If you don't see this value then right click in any space in the right sideand choose "New-DWORD Value" and name this value to "No Save Settings" then press enterdouble click this value and give it the value "1" then press ok
6-Restart your computer to see the changes

HAVING ICONS WITH NO "NAME"

Normally you have to have a name for an icon, just spaces are not allowed. To create an icon with no name attached:
Make sure NUM LOCK is on Highlight the Icon you want to changeRight-Mouse click and select Rename While holding down the Alt key, type "0160"
Now the icon will have no name below it.
